28th June 2013: Omega-3 DHA’s brain health benefits may emerge in later childhood

The potential brain health benefits of increased intake of DHA at birth may take several years to emerge.

The study, of a small cohort of children, indicates that infants fed formula with higher levels of DHA did not always show cognitive effects at 18 months of age, but significant effects for vocabulary, rule learning and intelligence when measured from age three to six, according to research published by the University of Kansas.

Although the study was small, it indicates that the benefits of LCPUFAs may not be apparent early in life (18 months of age) and implies that studies of nutrition and cognitive development should continue through early childhood.
